Shainis Palacios Crowned Miss Universe 2023 in El Salvador

On November 18th, El Salvador hosted the Miss Universe 2023 competition, marking the 72nd edition of this prestigious event.

Shainis Palacios from Nicaragua was crowned Miss Universe 2023, making history as the first contestant from Nicaragua to win the title. The 23-year-old Palacios received the crown and sash from her predecessor, R’Bonney Gabriel of the USA. The top three finalists also included Antonia Porcild from Thailand and Moraya Wilson from Australia.

Palacios, who values humility and the ability to be grateful for the little things, triumphed among 84 contestants through a week of events that featured swimsuits, evening gowns, and traditional attire. In her final interview with the judges, Palacios emphasized the importance of equal pay regardless of gender, advocating for women to have the opportunity to “work in all fields.” She asserted, “There are no limits for women.”

One of the most unique looks during the swimsuit segment came from Pakistan’s contestant. Erica Robin, 25, chose to appear in a flowing long dress rather than a swimsuit, making her the first participant from her country in Miss Universe. Despite facing disapproval from many compatriots, particularly over the swimsuit segment, Erica found a way to participate while respecting her country’s traditions and values.

Representing Bulgaria at the competition was Yulia Pavlikova, a child of a Bulgarian and a Ukrainian. Born in Crimea but raised in Bulgaria, Yulia dazzled in a golden outfit with large wings, reminiscent of an ancient goddess.

The event was attended by El Salvador’s President, Nayib Bukele, who announced that the next edition of Miss Universe will be held in Mexico.
